If you have a chance, be sure to pick up November's copy of "Harpers
Magazine". Dale Maharidge's "A Bumpy Ride" is a thorough discussion
about the poor condition of America's roads. Featured in the article is Leon Slater and his interview with Dale concerning Brickyard Road and Holton Township road conditions. Leon Slater
a long-time advocate of improving roads, took Dale on an afternoon's
ride to introduce him to our township (Dale is a Professor of Journalism
from Columbia University in NYC) and show him first-hand the
degradation of our roads. According to Dale, "Roads symbolize one of the
fundamental contracts between a government and its citizens. They are
among the most direct and regular relationships the people have with the
state. If the roads are failing, it means government is failing."
It is definitely worth the time to read.
